Brigade History
The Bonogin Valley Rural Fire Brigade was formed in 1992 after a wildfire devastated the southern end of the Valley in 1991. Local residents rallied together to protect their properties and they decided to form a brigade. The first meeting was held in February 1992 in a shaded area just across from the present Fire Station location. Twenty locals attended and with the help of Rod Cox from the Tallebudgera Valley Rural Fire Brigade a decision to form a brigade was made.
A committee was formed and along with nominated Officers the brigade was finally born. The first couple of years were difficult both financially and equipment wise. Donations were the only form of revenue and with no fire vehicle immediately available, we responded to fires in private vehicles with knapsacks and beaters.
Over the years fundraising was carried out and with local support from Bonogin and Mudgeeraba District, a new vehicle was purchased and delivered in December 1993. Membership increased and fundraising continued over the next five years enabling the Brigade to build a station and acquire subsequent vehicles.
Today the Station has been remodelled and extended as well as having a fleet of four fire appliances and a membership of operational and support members of forty. Revenue is generated by a local levy from the Gold Coast City Council rates system as well as fundraising events coordinated by the Brigade members. Bonogin Valley Rural Fire Brigade now attends bushfires and other incidents within the local surrounds, the Gold Coast area and throughout Queensland as well as deployments interstate.
The brigade is funded through a mixture of fundraising events and through a special levy collected by the City Of Gold Coast and allows the brigade to have funds available for operations, capital works, training and community education with an annual external financial audit to ensure compliance with regulations. The management of the brigade is overseen by the First Officer, Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary with collaboration with all members of the brigade to achieve our objectives to protect, educate and help the residents of Bonogin Valley and surrounds in times of bushfire or natural disasters. We welcome you to contact us at anytime should you have any questions on the operation of the brigade.
The brigade strongly encourages members of the local community and surrounds to come down and have a chat with us regarding becoming a volunteer or to learn more about bushfire safety. Please click on either the Join or Contact icons above for more information.
